The Genesis of
Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer

By Michael Fraenkel

Michael Fraenkel was Henry Miller's benefactor at the Villa Seurat where he began Tropic of Cancer.  Fraenkel's writings were also the most important philosophical influence on Miller's famous book.  Genesis is one of the rare occasions where a person who gave life to a character in a modern classic gets to give his own account of its composition.  The result is an essential literary and biographical document.  Miller knew that no one would ever write a better introduction to Troic of Cancer.  The two men later collaborated on The Hamlet Correspondence and other projects, but it is clear that without Fraenkel's input and inspiration Tropic of Cancer would never have been written.
